Thornaby 0 Marske United 6 – North Riding Senior Cup Final
Marske won the North Riding Senior Cup for the second time in their history with a comfortable 6-0 victory against a youthful Thornaby side, missing a number of cup-tied players including Dale Hopson, Matty Waters, Joe Taylor and Kallum Hannah. Marske also had cup-tied players of their own in goalkeeper Ryan Catterick, who had played for Guisborough Town earlier in the competition plus Dave McTiernan. In addition, Liam O’Sullivan was on holiday and Louis Johnson was unavailable.
Marske lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Matthew Wilkinson in goal, Andrew May, Kevin Burgess and skipper Adam Wheatley are the centre backs, with Curtis Round at left wing back and Connor Smith on the right. The central midfield trio was made up of Craig Gott, Glen Butterworth and Lewis Maloney with Matty Tymon and Adam Boyes up front.
With only 2 minutes on the clock, Marske thought that they had taken the lead only to see Wheatley’s powerful header from a short corner chalked off by the assistant referee for offside at the taking of the corner. The opening exchanges of the game were tight on a slick surface thanks to the continuous rain throughout the day and as the game started. On 15 minutes, the home side came very close to taking the lead when a 25 yard free kick from ex-Marske player Peter Bulmer hit the top of the bar and went out for a goal kick. Four minutes later, youngster Bobby Rye tried his luck with a looping header, but Wilkinson saved with ease. At the other end, Marske came close to opening the scoring when a goal-bound header from Tymon was superbly cleared off the line by a Thornaby defender. However, Marske weren’t to be denied and took the lead on 22 minutes when a corner from Gott was headed towards goal by Boyes and Tymon was on hand to flick the ball past Ollie Simpson in the Thornaby goal. Just 4 minutes later it was 2-0 with Tymon the scorer again, heading home a Butterworth cross, following excellent build-up play on the left involving Boyes and Maloney. With the clock showing 33 minutes it was 3-0 to Marske when a superb through ball from Gott saw Boyes beat the offside trap and take the ball past the sliding Simpson and a retreating defender before slotting the ball into an empty net. Marske were in control now and another excellent move ended with a shot from Maloney which was well saved by Simpson. With the game in the 2nd minute of first half injury time an advancing Wheatley was fouled just outside the box but the resulting free kick from Maloney was superbly tipped over the bar by Simpson.

Marske made it 4-0 just 5 minutes into the 2nd half when Boyes got his second goal of the game, flicking the ball on to Tymon, who saw his shot rebound into the path of Boyes, who made no mistake from close range. Marske made their first change of the game on the hour mark, with Maloney replaced by Jack Blackford. Two minutes later it was 5-0 when an excellent through ball from Blackford sent Gott clear, with the Thornaby defence appealing for offside, and the midfielder made no mistake coolly slotting the ball past Simpson for his 98th Marske goal. Marske immediately made a second change with Butterworth replaced by Garbutt. Smith was next to try his luck picking up a weak clearance and trying his luck from 20 yards, but his chip went just over the bar. As the game approached the last 15 minutes Marske made their final change with Smith replaced by Billy Clark. It was all Marske as this point; Gott brought a great save from Simpson from a free kick after Tymon was fouled and Tymon then headed a Gott cross wide. Billy Clark was in the thick of the action immediately, showing neat footwork to create a chance for Boyes but Carter cleared the ball off the line. With 10 minutes left, Marske made it 6 when a right wing cross from Gott found Tymon at the back post who powerfully headed home to seal his hat-trick.
